StartSmart… Online Parent Session

It’s no secret that parents play a critical role in the learning-to-drive process, from checking into state licensing processes to supervising practicing driving. With all the details involved in getting your teen safely behind the wheel, it’s a good idea to have a game plan.

AAA has developed an online course for parents of teens who are – or soon will be – learning to drive. The StartSmart Online Parent Session draws on AAA Foundation for Traffic Safety research to prepare you to navigate your teen’s learning-to-drive experience. This two-hour webinar explains the licensing process and parents’ role. It demonstrates how to reinforce what your teen is learning in driver education and how to maximize the practice driving that you’ll do with your teen. Teaching essential elements of safe driving in an interactive and innovative way, this online program aims to ensure that safe driving habits are developed and maintained for life.

Parent-Teen Agreement

The period after a novice driver obtains his or her license is one of the most crucial in terms of safety. Novice teen drivers have highly elevated crash rates during the first few months of independent driving. Recognizing and avoiding the risk factors that contribute to crashes is an important step to mitigate your teen’s risk behind the wheel.

This agreement outlines the concept of driving as a privilege and a learned skill that should be taken seriously by parents and teens alike.

**This only covers the state-required 24-hours of classroom education. You will still be responsible for enrolling in 8 hours of in-car training with a certified driving instructor. Students can start in-car training after completing 24 hours of online or classroom education. When looking for a driving school for in-car training, make sure to let the school know you are enrolled in an online course.
